Knowing who the characters are, the setting and where the story takes place , the plot and what happens in the text, and the theme and the big idea of the story, are all extremely important to understand and comprehend the story. Often, when a reader understands the literary elements, they can anticipate what will come next in the story. For example, if you know the characters and how they act and think, you can guess how they will react to new situations that develop in the plot of the story. This is a great strategy to building comprehension!
