A Message From Mr. C - "Today we watched the story of "Caine's Arcade." It was about 9-year-old Caine Monroy who created his own arcade out of cardboard boxes and everyday objects. The boy ran his arcade from his father's auto parts store in Los Angeles. Caine didn't get very many customers, but he kept working and persevered. One day, a man named Nirvan Mullick unexpectedly came across the arcade while getting a part for his car, and discovered the level of commitment and thought Caine had put into the arcade, and became Caine's first customer! Mullick then arranged for a flash mob from social media sites to come by the arcade, increasing the awareness of the arcade. It is a story that reminds us of the positive power of creativity and that we can ALL do something to make someone's day better! How will you make someone's day better today?
Then we watched "Caine's Arcade 2: From a Movie to a Movement" and decided to participate in the Global Cardboard Challenge. On Thursday, October 3 we will take two hours of our day to to be as creative as possible using cardboard. We might make a game, or a toy, or a costume, or a race car! This means that we will need cardboard. If you have any that you are willing to donate, please bring it in!" |

A Message From Mr. C - "What a great first day! It was a pleasure meeting all of you today and I know we are going to have an awesome year. Today we had a nice welcome back assembly ! Hero even came! Then we came back to Room 430 and talked about 4th grade and how you are all members of the HLC: Hiawatha Leadership Club. This means that during the year you will help provide the school with some much needed services and volunteering. These responsibilities include collecting recycling every other week, leading the school in the pledges and WHIA Hawk Radio on Fridays, washing lunch trays, Leading a Hawks have Heart service project, and KB: Kindergarten Buddies! We started off HLC right away this year with meeting our buddies and helping them fill out an activity. After that, it was outside for some fresh air. Wow - this day sure went by fast. I hope you had a great first day back and I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!"
