[SCHOLASTIC SCHOLARS / WORDSMITH / PAINTING WITH WORDS] - Today we started Module 2: Come to Your Senses. We asked the Essential Question: How do people and animals use their senses to navigate the world? Then we read What are the Five Senses? While reading we analyzed the text to find the Central IDea: The most important idea in a text. We distinguished the difference between Central Idea and a Detail - a detail a specific idea that supports the main idea.
HOMEWORK: NHW IF NOT FINISHED: Scholastic Scholars Station Packet - Due Friday, October 22 EVERYDAY: Read for at least 20 minutes! [PUZZLING] - Today we looked at how to estimate to help us check to see if our answer is reasonable. WE learned that we can round up for a high estimation and round down for a low estimation. For example 5 x 34. A high estimation would be 5 x 40 and a low estimation would be 5 x 30. HOMEWORK: Homework 2.5 - Page 37 - Due Wednesday, October 20 * Lost your Homework? [HOW STUFF WORKS] (with Mrs. Coontz) - Today we took a field trip to the MSU Children's Garden. In our first station we learned about how plants protect themselves. They use mechanical (hairs, thorns, spikes, spines) and chemical (poisons, smell, latex). In our second station we made observations about our lettuce plants, collected data by measuring how tall the leaves were, what the leaves looked like, and what color they were. We also learned that photosynthesis requires sunlight, water, and CO2 which makes glucose and O2. After that, we found leaves and traced them with crayons. In our third station, we learned about the parts of a flower and looked at them under a microscope! In our last station, we learned that plants can tell time. In the day time, a plant does photosynthesis, but at night it doesn't. HOMEWORK: NHW * For more information about Science, check out Mrs. Coontz's website.
