What experiences bring diverse people together?
Diversity happens when a group of different people come together. Diversity can be found in a variety of things and places, like schools, sports teams, and even clubs. Paying attention to diversity can teach you a lot about people by introducing new ways of doing things and by allowing you to appreciate different traditions. Respecting diversity can even help you make new friends. Meet Maureen and Ashanti. They both come from distinct backgrounds. Maureen is Asian-American. Ashanti is African American. At first, they didn't think they had similar interests. After they discussed their hobbies, they realized that they both enjoyed music. They listened to the distinct differences in their music, and then they listened to the similarities. Before long, Maureen and Ashanti had an appreciation for each other's backgrounds. They also found that they had each made a new friend.

SEQUENCESequencing is the order in which ideas happen in a text. It can also mean the steps people follow to do something.
Identifying the sequence of events in a story helps a reader better understand the order of events. You can identify explicit (obvious) sequence relationships because of clue words such as first, then, next, after, and last. If the sequence is implicit (hidden), there may not be any clues words and you will have to figure it out on your own. Words such as while, meanwhile, and during can show when events happen at the same time. This skill also helps readers recognize patterns to better determine cause and effect. |
